Kenya: Panic as Transformer Explodes at Daystar University

A power transformer at Daystar University, Valley Road campus in Nairobi exploded on Wednesday evening, leaving students, passersby and motorists scampering for safety.

A resultant fire spread aggressively to Daystar University parking bay and left a car belonging to a student burnt down.

While confirming the incident, the institution's Chief Security Officer Major (Rtd) Steve Leakono said the fire occurred after a transformer exploded at the parking area.

"The incident was successfully responded to by our students and staff, unfortunately one vehicle belonging to our student was burnt," said the Chief Security Officer in a statement.

Following the incident, the university's security office sent out a statement to students and staff members.

Kenya Power technicians were deployed to the scene to contain the situation and establish the cause.

No one was injured during the 4.20pm incident although the cause of the transformer's explosion still remains unclear.
