Kenya: Anti-BBI Rally Set for Mumias Cancelled By Police

16 January 2020

Nairobi — A parallel political rally by allies of Deputy President William Ruto in Mumias has been cancelled by police, a day to the event that was seen as planned to rival another organized by proponents of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

The Mumias meeting was organized by former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Rashid Echesa--both loyal to Ruto for his 2022 presidential ambitions.

Police sent issued a letter cancelling the meeting late Wednesday, citing a possibility of violent scenes due to a similar meeting in Kakamega fronted by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and other Luhya leaders who have endorsed the initiative by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

"This is to notify you that this office has cancelled your permit to carry out the exercise," states a letter by Mumias OCS Albert Chebii, "by this letter, be informed that any person contravening this directive will be held criminally responsible,"

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala saying said it was time their counterparts called off their plans to hold their rally at Bukhungu Stadium.
