A taxi transporting school pupils overturned and caught fire in Rosetta, killing one pupil and the driver, and injuring 19 other pupils, according to the Department of Education.
It is alleged that the taxi was overloaded.
"This taxi accident that happened today at Rosseta area, towards Mooi River, the taxi overturned and caught fire. One child passed on. There are 15 [pupils] currently at Northdale Hospital. They are injured but stable," department spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa said on Tuesday.
He said the pupils involved in the accident attended Asithuthuke Combined School.
Mthethwa also said the driver allegedly attempted to overload the taxi at a school before the accident occurred.
"He was chased away at Shea O'Connor Combined School when he tried to further load the taxi, which was already beyond capacity."
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police were investigating a culpable homicide case.
"A 24-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger were declared dead at the scene. The other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated."
