Kenya: Lamu Police Hunt for Father Who Slashed Daughter Found With a Man

Police in Lamu are hunting for a man who slashed and injured his 14-year-old daughter with a panga after he found her talking with her boyfriend in a bush.

The man from Hindi could not control his anger after spotting his daughter, a Class Eight pupil flirting with the man believed to be her lover.

He immediately descended on her with kicks and blows and slashed her with a panga after her boyfriend managed to escape.

The girl suffered injuries on the head, legs and hands.

The pupil lives with her father after her mother died several years ago.

Neighbours who talked to the Nation said the father has on several occasions warned his daughter to stay away from men.

Four months ago, the man is said to have battered the girl after he found out she was in relationships with various men in the area.

"The man has constantly been warning his daughter against engaging in sexual relationships with men and instead concentrate on her studies. It's unfortunate that today things escalated when he found her and a man believed to be her lover in a bush. He immediately attacked them. The man escaped but he injured the daughter and went into hiding," said a neighbour.

Hindi Chief Jamal Keah confirmed the incident and said that she was taken to Hindi Dispensary from where she was referred to the King Fahad County Hospital in Lamu town for further treatment.

"The girl narrated how her father pounced on her with a panga when he found her talking to a male friend. Though his intentions were right, the approach was totally wrong and uncalled for. People shouldn't take the law in their own hands," said Mr Keah.

A local primary school headteacher said the girl has on several occasions been assaulted by her father who is alcoholic.

The teacher called for an urgent establishment of a rescue centre in Lamu in order to save pupils, particularly girls undergoing gender-based violence.

"The father married another woman after the girl's mother died. Both drink alcohol daily. The girl has on many occasions reported to me about the beatings she undergoes in the hands of her father. We need a rescue centre here in Lamu to save such girls," said the school head.

Lamu County Police Commander Moses Murithi said police are looking for the suspect who went into hiding after committing the brutal act.

"The man assaulted his daughter with a panga, leaving her with deep cuts on her head and limbs. He is on the run and is being sort to face charges," said Mr Murithi.

A week ago, a man attacked and seriously injured his wife with a panga after their 16-year-old daughter was impregnated by a 59-year-old man at Mswakini village in Hindi, Lamu West.

The Class Six girl gave birth last week.

Teen pregnancies and cases of sexual abuse on children have been on the rise in Lamu, especially after schools were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a recent report from the Lamu County statistics office, a total of 512 primary and secondary school girls have been impregnated since schools closed in March.
