Botswana: Hometown - Pizza With Difference

Gaborone — Pizza has become popular around the world, leading to fascinating varieties, to the delight of pizza lovers.

In some countries, pizza is made with ingredients popular with the locals.

In Japan for instance, some prefer mochi than flour to make the crust.

A pizza enthusiast and maker, Mr Tshepo Monthe, has proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

He uses a self-built, outdoor traditional oven to bake pizza.

Mr Monthe owns a pizza joint aptly called, Hometown Pizza, in Kumakwane and he targets passing motorists and the community.

"The idea of making and selling my own pizza stemmed from my love of culinary arts. I have a knack for creating unique dishes, which is innate and simple," he said.

Growing up in Serowe, he was told by his family that he was a good cook, but did not take his craft seriously until 2009 after completing Form 5.

"I did not do well in my Form 5 examinations and after a failed second attempt, I decided to get a job in a restaurant in Gaborone," he said.

As fate would have it, his love for creating assorted foods developed and he finally had the courage to start his own pizza joint.

"For two years, I religiously watched videos on YouTube on how to make a traditional pizza oven. My intention was to perfect the art of creating an oven. That is how much I was determined to start my own pizza business," he explained.

Offering a variety of succulent flavours such as mexican, vegetarian, steak and chicken, his pizzas would leave one begging for more and guaranteed to compete with popular outlets.

Mr Monthe said the business was doing well and his biggest form of advertising had been referrals.

He said he was planning on opening a face book page to advertise and build a client base but for now, his aim was to continue perfecting the art of making lip-smacking pizzas.

The challenge, he said, was finding space to operate from but his kgosi came through for him.

Mr Monthe further said the lockdown that effected because of COVID-19 also affected his business.

A regular customer and Kumakwane resident, Ms Boitumelo Matlhaku, spoke highly of Mr Monthe's customer service.

"This young man is well mannered and values a customer. I knew nothing about pizza but thanks to Hometown Pizza, I am hooked. His prices are affordable adding to the overall appeal of his product," stated Ms Matlhaku.
