Eleven houses were on Thursday razed down in a residential estate in Bomet town.
Property of unknown value was destroyed in the inferno at Raia estate.
Bomet Disaster Management Officer Stanley Mutai said firefighters put out the fire with the help of public members.
"Very little was salvaged from the inferno" Mr Mutai said.
He said the started at one of the tenant's houses as he tried to light a gas cooker.
The gas cooker, which was leaking, exploded, but the man escaped unharmed.
Five out of the 11 tenants had left for work when the fire broke out and nothing was salvaged from their houses which were locked.
