Nigeria: FCT Fire Service Saved N2.35 Billion Property in 7 Months

13 August 2020

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has said its fire fighters saved property worth N2.35 billion from fire in the past seven months.

The Director of the FCT Fire Service, Julius Opetunsin, who made this known on Tuesday at the opening of a new fire station in Zuba, said the department now had 15 fire stations across the territory.

Opetunsin said, "From January to date we have recorded 325 fire outbreaks and saved N2.35bn worth of property."

He explained that, "It is not only fire that we fight. We also go for recue. We have flood disasters and building collapse."

He, therefore, urged residents of the FCT and stakeholders to support the effort of the fire service in tackling issues that caused fire outbreaks.

He added that the new Zuba station was strategically located in order to curb cases of fire in the suburb.

The director explained that the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, had allocated money for the procurement of fire fighting equipment.

He said, "When you go to salvage people and property and people now vandalise those vehicles, they are not encouraging the FCT minister's effort. I want to implore them that once there is fire they should just call us and within two to three minutes we will be there. They should protect our equipment so that we will protect lives and property."
