August 23, 2020 has great significance as:
- The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition (United Nations)
- The anniversary of the first ancestral remembrance ceremonies (dawn and dusk) sponsored by the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project at Fells Point, Baltimore, MD, in 2012.
Our goal is to raise funds to install markers at the remaining 26 unmarked U.S. Middle Passage arrival locations by 2025. Before the nation marks its 250th celebration of independence in 2026, we want each of the 52 documented locations to have a marker acknowledging and commemorating the arrival, influence, and contributions of African and African-descended people.
We ask that you make a donation to the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project and sustain our national effort to commemorate and promote awareness of Africans and their descendants in the making of America. To fulfill our mission of truth-telling and healing, MPCPMP cannot continue as we have during these last eight years - with all volunteers and an annual budget never exceeding $15,000. Consider becoming a sustaining sponsor by committing to make a recurring, monthly donation of an amount that fits your budget.
You can support our project at via our Network for Good Donation Page or Paypal.
Ann L. Chinn is Executive Director of the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project
