Liberia: Senate Confirms 59 Liberians in Ten Months

-Adjourns 3rd Session; Concurs With Lower House In Passing 2020/2021 National Budget

Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Albert Chie has disclosed that they [Liberian Senate] confirmed the total of 59 Liberians and declined on four of which one was recalled by President George Manneh Weah.

The pronouncement was made in his adjournment message on Wednesday October 14, 2020.

Although the Senate Pro-Temp Chie didn't name those confirmed and those they declined on, but said the Senate did due diligence to the processes leading to the confirmation of those Liberians.

At the same time, the Liberian Senate passed 27 bills during the period under review.

Of the 27 bills, Pro-Tempore Chie only named the 2020/2021 National Budget, the amended Central Bank of Liberia Act and the Tourism Bill.

In a related development, the Liberian Senate has concurred with the House of Representatives in passing the 2020/2021 National Budget in a tone of over US$570million.

According to Pro-Tempore Chie, US$1m was approved in the 2020/2021 for private school teachers in the country as a package for them in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that affected every sector of the country.

He also said the amount of US$8million was approved in the budget for the Ganta-Fish Town highway pavement.

In his adjournment message, Senator Chie wished his colleagues who are seeking reelection all the best in their political sojourn and hopes that all fourteen of them will return in January 2021 to continue the work of the Liberian people.

Fourteen of the current 30 Senators are seeking reelection comes December 8, 2020.

Only Senator Alphonso Gaye of Grand Gedeh County has declined to re-contest after serving that body for nine consecutive years.

Senator Chie also urged all aspirants in the impending elections to be law abiding.

"Fourteen senators seeking reelection and we wish them well and caution all aspirants against the use of inflammatory statements to break out violence. We need to place special confidence in the National Elections Commission," Senator Chie said.
