Kenya: Bribe-Taking Officers Soiling the Name of Police Service

12 January 2021

Rogue police - Every morning, Maina Mwangi reports, three to five police officers on the Thika Superhighway service lane at Rexol Petrol Station, before the Kimbo underpass, flag down matatus and collect bribes. Another two at the railway crossing on the Kimbo-Matangi road target tuk-tuks. "They are soiling the image of those doing a good job controlling traffic." His contact mmainam@gmail.com.

Bad business - Doing business with the counties seems not for the faint-hearted. Lucy Mwangi built a classroom at a primary school in Sosian Ward, Laikipia County, in October 2016 and invoiced for nearly Sh1.6 million. She is yet to be paid and her business in Nyahururu Town was auctioned for failing to service a bank loan. "Why should it take so long?" Her contact is Tel: 0720925433.

Fuliza pain - Safaricom's new Fuliza lending is, indeed, messing up M-Pesa, remarks Andrew Mokaya Birai, echoing a recent observation. He recently fell victim to it after mistakenly sending money to the wrong number. "On calling the recipient, he said he had 'Fulizad' and, that way, my Sh970 was swallowed up!" It was a painful loss that he is yet to recover from. His contact is biraiandrew@gmail.com.

Air pollution - While it is okay for youth in Nairobi's Eastlands to eke out a living rearing pigs, James Gathuita is unhappy with the goings-on at Huruma, Mathare Sub-County, near the CDF Hall. "They burn rubber to produce fire to cook for the pigs, unleashing choking thick smoke. Can the authorities stop this to curb respiratory diseases?" His contact is jamesgathuita994@gmail.com.

Solar power - Two words Mwangi Karuga wishes to hear in the New Year are "solar panels", as an affordable source of power. "This is the year for adopting solar energy, which is free electricity from the sun. Once we install the panel, that is all the expenditure. The sun and wind are sources of free energy. Let's capitalise on them to save costs." His contact is mwangikaruga8@gmail.com.

Have a cheaper day, won't you!
