Botswana: Efforts in Place to Establish Cooperative - Official

Damochujenaa — Efforts are being made to establish a cooperative at Damochujenaa in Mmadinare constituency.

Department of Cooperative Development official, Mr Lesego Gaogane said in a kgotla meeting addressed by the area MP, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi at Damochujenaa on Wednesday that the cooperative would be on textile covering villages of Tobane, Damochujenaa, Mmadinare, Sefhophe and Robelela.

He said a group had been trained on the formation of a cooperative and that it was in the process of drawing its constitution.

Mr Gaogane said working as a group was more beneficial as it would help the group to meet the demand.

For his part, Mr Molebatsi described cooperatives as beneficial, saying its formation would contribute to the development of Mmadinare constituency.

He applauded efforts made so far, saying Damochujenaa was the only village which did not have a cooperative in his constituency.

He said cooperatives such as Mmadinare Cooperative were doing well, adding that cooperatives and trusts were not helpful to individual members only as they could also help transform rural economies.

Regarding BCL mine, Mr Molebatsi, who is also Assistant Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, said efforts were being made to open BCL mine.

He said efforts to open the mine were at an advance stage, adding that an investor has been identified and that once the whole process had been completed, the community would be informed.

In addition, he also sensitised the community on the upcoming population census, urging them to be present during the census.

He said the completion of the census would be followed by the delimitation commission which would inform how constituencies would be divided.

He noted that Damochujenaa was not a ward because of its low population.
