Uganda - Internet Restored After President Yoweri Museveni's Electoral Victory

Social media platforms in Uganda played a crucial role in the mobilization of opposition leader Bobi Wine's followers. Shutting down the internet on the eve of polls added to doubts about how fair the elections were.

Bobi Wine's opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) announced that it would contest the official results of elections on Thursday, January 14, which it dismissed as "fraudulent." It also called for the release of the singer-turned-lawmaker, who is presently under house arrest. Wine found a way to breach the ban on Twitter shortly after polling stations closed, to alert the world to his predicament.
