Tunisia: General Situation of Industrial Sector Virtually Stable in Q4 2020 (Ins Survey)

Tunis/Tunisia — The general situation of the industrial sector in the fourth quarter of 2020 was virtually stable, it emerged from a survey on the situation and prospects of industrial companies, released Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (French: INS).

The survey, conducted by INS, among heads of industrial companies, projects a stability during the first quarter of 2021.

Regarding manufacturing industries, the survey showed an improvement in the growth of industrial production, during the fourth quarter of 2020, compared to the third quarter of the same year.

Heads of industrial companies expect, however, a decline in the growth of industrial production, during the first quarter of 2021. In terms of demand for industrial products, the survey showed an improvement in demand growth in the fourth quarter of 2020, which will be followed by a decline in the first quarter of 2021.

As far as manufacturing industries are concerned, a positive growth in industrial production was recorded, especially with regard to demand for industrial products, including foreign demand, during the 4th quarter of 2020. On the other hand, it is estimated that demand will decline during the first quarter of 2021.

Regarding external demand for industrial products, for the first quarter of 2021, the survey showed a continued improvement in demand.

The business leaders polled also spoke of a virtual stagnation of the general situation of the industrial sector during the fourth quarter of 2020 with a continuation of negative growth rates.

For the first quarter of 2021, business leaders spoke of a continued stagnation in the development of the general situation.

As for the evolution of industrial production by sector during the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the third quarter of the same year, the outcomes of the survey showed a remarkable improvement in the growth of industrial production of the building materials sectors as well as mechanical and electrical industries which saw positive growth.

The sector of chemical industries recorded an improvement in the growth of its industrial production, which nevertheless remains at a negative rate. The sector of manufacturing industries experienced a significant deceleration in the growth of its output.

The other industrial sectors are recording stagnation in their production, which remains in negative territory.

Regarding the expected development of production by sector during the first quarter of 2021, compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, manufacturers expect an improvement in the growth of industrial production, particularly in mechanical, electrical and manufacturing industries.

However, a decline in industrial production is expected for the rest of the sectors, with the exception of the agro-food industries sector, which will record a stagnation in production.
