Uganda: Vipers Strike As Ndejje Tame Villa

Vipers and SC Villa are two big sides that have in recent years suffered the ignominy of early Uganda Cup elimination.

After the first leg of the round of 32 games that kicked off this season's competition yesterday, the two appear to have picked different lessons.

Vipers, who lost to neighbours Kajjansi in the round of 64 last season, appear to have learnt their lesson after picking up 3-0 first leg win over Busoga United at the St Mary's Stadium in Kitende.

"We remember what happened last season so we played a strong team and also wanted to kill the tie in the first leg," Vipers head coach Fred Kajoba said.

Ibrahim Orit gave Vipers the lead with a header from a corner before Caesar Manzoki headed in a Disan Galiwango cross and completed his brace after a give-and-go with substitute Dan Sserunkuma.

For Busoga, the result appears to alhave ready put the tie out of their reach after lacking conviction in front of goal, particularly in the second half when Isma Mugulusi found openings in the Vipers defence.

The diminutive playmaker came on in the second half after struggling with a cold in the lead up to the game.

'We learnt our lessons'

The meeting was the first in nine days between the two teams who face off in the return leg on Friday and in the league four days later.

"We're playing well and only need to improve our efficiency in front of goal," said Busoga United coach Abbey Kikomeko, whose side came into the Cup tie on the back of a four-game winning run.

In Bombo, Brian Ssali scored the only goal of the game to hand Ndejje a 1-0 first leg lead over nine-time champions SC Villa going into their Sunday's return leg.

The Jogoos, who were eliminated at the round of 32 stage by third division side Nkambi in 2019 and by Kiboga Young at the round of 64 in 2017, failed to get a goal yesterday despite Ndejje's Nicholas Luzige being sent off midway through the second half.
