Tunisia: 403 Social Housing Units Handed Over in Kairouan

Tunis/Tunisia — 403 social housing units were handed over in the governorate of Kairouan at a ceremony chaired Monday by Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and attended by ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Tunis Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Saqr.

Regional executives and families of martyrs of the security institution and military and a number of citizens who are beneficiaries of these homes were also present.

Speaking to reporters, the Prime Minister said the government has, since 2012, implemented a specific programme for social housing, through which many housing units have been built, but this program has found in some times blockages in the distribution of these units.

He noted that the governorate of Kairouan has benefited today more than 400 units, while 4,000 units are dedicated to the rest of the governorates in the next period.

The Saudi-funded project is part of the Tunisian-Saudi social cooperation, which also provides for funding the Salman bin Abdulaziz University Hospital in Kairouan in addition to other projects.

The Saudi ambassador said the start of the distribution of housing units is a boost to bilateral cooperation between the two countries and projects funded by Saudi Arabia in Tunisia since 1975, through loans and grants.

He added, in this context, that nearly 21 projects have already been completed, in addition to 13 others, some of which are underway and others in the study phase, not to mention other projects planned in the city of Tunis.

He said that the study on the construction of the "King Salman bin Abdulaziz" University Hospital in Kairouan has reached its final phase, indicating that COVID-19 University Hospital has delayed these studies in 2020.

The construction of the hospital and the rehabilitation of the Okba Ibn Nafâa Mosque will be carried out in the coming months, he pointed out.

The social housing units that were distributed Monday in Kairouan are divided between Kairouan City (El Manar) with 331 units whose cost is 21 MD and Sbikha with 72 units for a cost of 4.2 MD, said Minister of Public Works, Housing and Infrastructure Kamel Doukh.

The area of a single social housing is estimated at 75 m2 for a total cost of 65 thousand dinars of which 27 thousand dinars paid by the recipient, or 100 dinars per month for 25 years, he noted.
