South Africa: Trio Appeared in Court for ATM Robbery

Vusi Sambo (29), Ernest Maphosa (29) and Maakane Nkateko appeared in court on Monday, 12 April 2021 at Dealesville Magistrates' Court on a charge of common robbery and the case was postponed to Tuesday, 13 April 2021 for bail application.

The trio were arrested by Sergeant Sethembile Nyenzane, Sergeant Tracy Gentles and Constable Raletuba Tladi on route to Bloemfontein after allegedly robbing a man at an ATM in Dealesville.

The complainant was at an ATM when he was approached by one of the suspects, who aggressively demanded his bank card, pin number and two of his cellphones. In fear of his life the complainant gave the suspect the items.

After robbing the complainant, the suspect drove off in a Grey Polo Sedan, the complainant tried to chase after them on foot. While running he noticed a police car patrolling, he stopped the car and reported the incident. Sergeant Nyenzane took the complainant along and took the direction of Bloemfontein. They spotted the suspect's vehicle and stopped it.

One of the suspects got out the vehicle and approached the police car holding a plastic bag carrying the complainant's cellphone and money and pleaded with the complainant not to open a case. Sergeant Nyenzane intervened and arrested the suspect. One of the suspects tried to run but he was also arrested. The Sergeant called for assistance and all three suspects were arrested.
