The Independent Review Mechanism (IRM) of the African Development Bank Group has published a landmark report that deals with spiritual and cultural issues that emerged during the implementation of two Bank-funded energy projects in Uganda.

The report presents measures that the Bank should consider when appraising compensation in such cases. It also aims to enhance social inclusion and trust among stakeholders of projects funded by the Bank in the future.

The publication is particularly valuable in the context of the Bank's increasing financing of renewable and non-renewable energy and infrastructure projects, which could potentially affect many people whose cherished ancestral sites are located in anticipated project areas.

The complaint around these projects is regarded as one of the most complex cases handled by the IRM so far.
