Nairobi — Kariobangi Sharks completed a double over BetKing Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia after beating them 2-1 at the Thika Sub County Stadium on Wednesday, as KCB moved to within four points of leaders Tusker with a similar win over Ulinzi Stars.
In other fixtures, Posta Rangers and Nzoia Sugar as well as Nairobi City Stars and Vihiga United both played to barren draws in Nairobi and Nakuru respectively.
Meanwhile, Wazito FC beat Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1.
In Nairobi, Gor Mahia’s woes continued as they suffered a defeat that deflates their ambitions to finish in the top four. They have failed to convince over the last two games since the departure of coach Carlos Manuel vaz Pinto as well as midfielder Kenneth Muguna.
Gor would have had a good start into the game when off a 15th minute corner, skipper Harun Shakava volleyed towards goal but Sharks keeper Brandon Obiero turned the ball behind for another corner.
However, it was the Sharks who would get into the lead when Kapaito scored his 22nd goal of the season from the penalty spot.
The forward took responsibility himself after he was brought down inside the box by Philemon Otieno, and he made no mistake sending Gad Mathews the wrong way to continue his hot scoring streak.
K’Ogalo should have drawn level on the half hour mark when another corner fell on Harun Shakava’s path, but the defender bounced his header over the bar unmarked from the edge of the six yard box.
Sharks should have gone to the break two goals up and Kapaito with his 23rd goal of the season but he was denied by Mathews in the 40th minute.
James Mazembe made a daunting run on the left before cutting back the ball for Kapaito whose shot was partially blocked by Andrew Juma, taking the sting off it before Mathews collected.
In the second half, Gor camped in Sharks’ half to try and get themselves back into continention but found their hopes nipped in the bud off a classic counter attack.
Sharks defended a freekick well and played out from the back before Ronald Odede launched a long ball to an unarked Robert Onyango.
The young striker controlled on his chest before slamming the ball into the net with a low shot.
Gor clawed one back in the 8th minute through Jules Ulimwengu, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.
Meanwhile in the early kick off, David SImiyu scored the winner in the 89th minute as KCB came from a goal down to beat Ulinzi Stars 2-1 and move to within four points of league leaders Tusker FC who drew 0-0 with Mathare United on Tuesday.
The bankers found themselves trailing in the fourth minute of added time in the first half when Masita Masuta fored the soldiers into the lead.
However, a hard fighting KCB converted from the spot 10 minutes after the restart through Derrick Otanga. They would dominate the match and SImiyu sped off in the 89th minute to score the winner and take KCB to 51 points, four behind leaders Tusker.
