Tunisia: ISIE Publishes Calendar for Municipal By-Elections in Chihia , Sfax

Tunis/Tunisia — The Independent High Authority for Elections (French: ISIE) released Monday a timetable for municipal by-elections in Chihia, Sfax. The elections are due on January 29 for police and military staff and January 30 for other voters.

Candidate filing takes place at the headquarters of the local election authority in Sfax 1 from November 29 to December 6, the ISIE said.

Approved lists will be announced no later than December 9. Final lists will be announced once legal challenges are considered, that is no later than January 9, 2022. Requests to withdraw candidacies need to be filed before January 1.

The electoral campaign kicks off on January 17 at midnight and comes to an end on January 28. Electoral silence will be in place form January 29 at midnight until polling stations close.

Preliminary results will be announced on February 2 at the latest. March 5 is the deadline to proclaim the final results of elections after challenges are considered.

Thirteen out 24 members of the municipal council of Chihia submitted their resignation to the governor of Sfax on October 19 over the "administrative and legal complexity of the Code of local authorities which impedes the implementation of development projects in the region ."

The municipal council was systematically dissolved fifteen days after the resignation of its members.
