African countries are increasingly adopting a Circular Economy development model, a development which led the governments of Rwanda, Nigeria and South Africa to launch the African Circular Economy Alliance in 2017. The African Development Bank hosts the secretariat of the Alliance, which currently has eight member countries.

As Circular Economy models have gained traction in Africa, mutual exchanges with European countries and businesses can benefit both sides.

The high-level side event on Circular Economy will:

Highlight some promising businesses in the EU and Africa that are applying circular economy models in key sectors.

Identify steps and requirements to overcome key challenges and increase cooperation to scale-up circular economy businesses on both sides and intensify EU-Africa economic relations on Circular economy.

Circular economy models will need to be tailored to the needs of African countries. A circular economy should be viewed as offering not only environment/ climate benefits, but also as a growth model that creates concrete and sustainable economic opportunities. These include employment-generating business opportunities and green jobs in reuse, repair and remanufacture and can contribute to meeting several Sustainable Development Goals.
