Liberia: WONGOSOL Preaches Empowerment for Liberian Women

The Women Non-Governmental Organizations Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) has ended a two-day policy advocacy training for 50 civil society organizations here.

Executive Director Madam Esther Davis Yango said, the training was intended to empower women on the various international conventions and protocols that the Government of Liberia has signed to protect and promote women's issues in the country.

Madam Yango noted that lack of empowerment of Liberian women over the years has undermined their potential in the political, economic and education arena.

She stressed that training will expose women to understanding the importance of promoting and advancing rights of women and girls' issues through advocacy and policy efforts.

According, to her, this would help to enhance sexual reproductive health rights, campaign against gender-based violence, while promoting women political participation and economic empowerment in Liberia.

She explained that the passage of the new Elections Law is critical for huge women participation in the pending presidential and representative elections, noting that political parties will be requested to make available certain percentage for women on their parties' tickets.

Madam Yango added that these international conventions should be implemented to help transform the plight of Liberian women.

She said Liberian women should actively get involved in political activities in the country, adding that women should be at the decision-making level, rather than being at the back.

She also stressed the need to encourage more women to participate in the democratic process by vying for elected positions, adding that women leaderships are sensitive to the plight of the ordinary citizens.
