NAMIBIA'S chief magistrate, Johanna Salionga, has been appointed to serve as an acting judge of the High Court over the next five months.
The Judicial Service Commission, which recommends the appointment of judges to the President, announced yesterday that President Hage Geingob has appointed Salionga as a High Court acting judge for the period from the start of November to the end of March next year.
Salionga was first appointed as a magistrate in 1992, and after some promotions served as an acting chief magistrate from March 2003 to August 2006, according to the commission's announcement.
Having held a position as deputy master of the High Court for nine years, until August 2015, Salionga became chief magistrate - a post in which she is the administrative head of the country's magistrate courts - in September 2015.
Salionga obtained a diploma in development studies and management and a diploma in law at the United Nations Institute of Namibia in Lusaka before she was first appointed as a magistrate.
She subsequently graduated with a bachelor's degree in law (LLB) from the University of the Free State in South Africa in 2011, and in 2015 and 2016 also participated in the Office of the Judiciary's basic training programme for aspirant judges.
