Kenya: Foreign Affairs PS Nominee Sing'oei Pledges to Institute Austerity Measures on Foreign Travel Expenditure

Nairobi — Principal Secretary Nominee for Foreign Affairs Abraham Korir Sing'oei on Tuesday pledged to institute austerity measures on foreign travel expenditure to aid the government reduce the ballooning wage bill on recurrent expenditure.

If approved, Korir promised to ensure that the budget allocated to the Ministry is utilized well and only necessary travels will be approved.

"I know foreign travel expenditure has been a big issue, but I would not want to sit here and tell this honourable committee that there will be no travels. There will be but what I can guarantee you is that if approved I will review the budget allocated to foreign travels and ensure money is spent on the most important foreign trips which are beneficial to this country," he said.

"Because you are yet to aporove me for this nomination I am unable to have access to all the documents that would be able to help me provide an informed response and that is why I sought your indulgence."

He stated that proper deployment and use of the Kenya's foreign Missions will be put in place in order to reduce the number of people travelling from the headquarters to other countries.

A lawyer by profession, Korir pointed out that he will ensure that relationship between Kenya and other countries is protected so as to tap into opportunities that exist in foreign countries a move that he said may serve as a solution to high youth unemployment in Kenya.

"We want to expand our market in various countries to ensure employment of our young people and also create a condusive environment for our local business to expand . Safaricom is now in Ethiopia and that's an opportinity created for our young people," Sing'oei said.

Sing'oei urged the commitee to approve his nomination saying his wealth of experience on international law and diaspora matters will help in improving service delivery at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If approved, he will replace Macharia Kamau who has been serving during Former President Uhuru Kenyatta's tenure.

Sing'oei has been serving as the Legal Advisor at the Executive Office of the then Deputy President William Ruto, where he is also the Head of Law and Policy.

He is also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
