Madrid — The end of the 26th Congress of the Socialist International (IS) on Sunday, also attended by Angola's ruling MPLA party, was marked by a speech delivered by the organisation's leader, Pedro Sánchez.
In his address, the new president of the IS promised openness and dialogue in running the organization, which brings together 170 political parties from 120 countries from all continents.
The three-day event focused mainly on themes related to the conflicts between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, in Iran, in the Tigray region (Ethiopia) and in Ukraine.
Hosted by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), the congress elected Pedro Sánchez as president of the IS, in his capacity as general secretary of the PSOE.
Pedro Sánchez takes over from Geoge Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece, in office.
During the meeting, Benedicta Lasi (Ghana) was also elected as General Secretary.
The meeting analysed issues such as the changes in the organisation's status, requests for membership, gender equality, climate change, as well as labour rights.
Election of vice presidents
On Saturday, the second day of the event, the secretary of the MPLA Political Bureau for International Relations, Manuel Augusto, was elected to one of the organisation's 36 vice-presidencies.
With the election, the MPLA returned to office, after 2008, 2012 and 2017, represented by Julião Mateus Paulo "Dino Matross.
The vice presidents were elected reflecting the geographic and political reality of the member parties spread across the different continents.
The Angolan delegation to the congress was headed by the vice-president of the MPLA, Luísa Damião.
Also joined the delegation the secretary of the Political Bureau for International Relations, Manuel Augusto, the former general secretary of the party, as vice-president of the IS, Julião Mateus Paulo "Dino Matross".
The Socialist International is a forum for ideas and discussions held every four year.
Social-democratic, socialist and labour political parties are represented in the organisation, described as the largest organisation of the parties worldwide.
