Kenya: Machakos University to Re-Open December 13 After Closure Over Riots

10 December 2022

Machakos — Machakos University will re-open on Tuesday after nearly a week of closure over persistent riots and insecurity.

Vice Chancellor Lucy Irungu who had earlier announced its closure citing heightened insecurity and students unrest said the institution will re-open on Tuesday.

"Following a special meeting convened on Friday, 9th December 2022, it was resolved that the university be re-opened on Tuesday, 13th December 2022 at 8.00 am. All students are advised to report ready to write their exams as scheduled in the approved examination timetable," a memo dated December 9, 2022, read in part.

"Further, students are advised to ensure that all exam requirements are met," Irungu stated in the memo.

The university was last Wednesday closed over students' demonstrations.

They had killed a prisons warder in the protest after also learning one of their colleague had succumbed to injuries in hospital.

He had been shot during the protests that started last Monday over claims of insecurity.

Security has been beefed up at the institution, said Machakos police boss Issa Mohamud.
