Nairobi — Detectives have arrested a 22-year-old Sugoi musician on suspicion of impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and obtaining an unknown amount of money fraudulently.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was apprehended following an operation carried out by agents attached to the Deputy President's office.
He allegedly created a fake Facebook account in the Deputy President's name and obtained money from unsuspecting citizens, ostensibly to support an ongoing campaign to feed Kenyans facing hunger.
According to DCI, the suspect allegedly published a pay bill number linked to an account at Eldoret's Standard Chartered bank and called on his over 14,000 followers to raise funds for hunger victims.
"Collins Kipleting Serem alias Rengstar, a benga artist based in Kamplemur village in Sugoi, was arrested after he created a fake Facebook account bearing the Deputy President's name and obtained money from unsuspecting netizens, allegedly meant for feeding Kenyans facing hunger," the agency said.
The suspect is currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
In a similar incident, detectives in Garissa on Saturday apprehended a 33-year-old man for impersonating a Kenya Defence Forces officer.
DCI said the suspect was apprehended hours after a team of detectives was dispatched to track him down from his hideout after he circulated a videotape on social media while dressed in military fatigue.
The agency stated that a search conducted following his arrest resulted in the recovery of the military uniform he used.
The suspect was later handed over to Anti-Terror Unit detectives for further questioning pending arraignment in court.
