Angola: National Assembly Elects New Composition of Its Bodies

Luanda — Parliament is due to approve next Friday (27) in an extraordinary plenary meeting the definitive composition of its bodies, under the proposal of the National Assembly Speaker, Carolina Cerqueira.

In their conference, held on Monday, the Parliamentary leaders decided that ruling MPLA party with majority in Parliament will hold the 1st and 3rd position of vice-Speakers, while the opposition UNITA will be in charge of the 2nd and 4th positions of the vice-Speakers.

The same will happen at the level of the Secretaries of the Bureau of the National Assembly.

The Parliamentary Group of MPLA had appointed in September of the last year the MPs Américo Cunonoca and Raúl Lima for the positions of vice Speaker and second vice Speaker, respectively.

At the time, UNITA did not attend the meeting and its MPs decided to walk out of the Parliament room, and having in the same month contested the resolution that elected the MPLA member to the position of 2nd vice-speaker of the National Assembly.

UNITA, which is represented in Parliament with 90 MPs, had been demanding over the months that the 2nd and 4th positions of the vice-Speakers could be held by its Parliamentary group.

Addressing the meeting, the Parliament Speaker Carolina Cerqueira said her proposal aimed at strengthening the institutional role of the National Assembly with legality, democratic spirit and, above all, contribute to a constructive and appeasing manner to the strengthening of democracy (...)".
