Kenya: Haji Elected President By East African Prosecutors

Nairobi — Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has been elected President of the Eastern Africa Association of Prosecutors (EAAP).

Haji was elected during the 10th AGM and Annual Conference in Kampala, Uganda.

He takes over from his Tanzanian counterpart Slyvester Mwakitalu.

He pledged to strengthen regional cooperation in Prosecution of transnational organized crimes.

"As President, the DPP will be able to advance innovative strategies to tackle transnational organized crime enhance Regional and International cooperation and collaboration in the prosecution of transnational organized crimes such as terrorism, corruption cybercrime and human trafficking among others," the ODPP said in a statement Tuesday.

The ODPP further highlighted that Haji's appointment is an acknowledgement of the important place that Kenya occupies in the criminal justice arena in Africa.

Other elected officials include, DRC and Rwanda will serve as joint Vice Presidents, Tanzania as Treasurer, Uganda as Secretary General, while Mozambique will serve as General Counsel.

The EAAP is an organization of national prosecution authorities (corporate membership) that was established in 2010 with the founding members being national prosecution authorities of the East Africa Community (EAC), whose members were Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The association later incorporated South Sudan when it became a Republic and a member of the EAC. It currently comprises of 12 member states.
