Kenya: MP Against Privatization of Mills Without Farmers Consent

Kisumu — Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo has opposed to the privatization of state owned mills in his constituency without public participation.

The mills include Chemelil, Muhoroni, and Miwani which is under receivership.

Koyoo says the people whose land was used to set up the factories must be consulted widely before the lease of the mills.

He says he is against a cabinet directive that allows them to privatize government assets without the approval of parliament.

The legislator said he will firmly be behind his people who have declined to have the mills disposed off through privatization without their consent.

Last month, the Cabinet approved the Privatization Bill, 2023, which repealed the Privatization Act, 2025.

Koyoo says he does not oppose the privatization of the mills but it must be done within the confines of the law.

Speaking to the press in his constituency, the MP says the process must be subjected to public participation.

Koyoo further hailed the re-establishment of Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) as contained in the Sugar Bill, 2023.

He says the Board once established will offer financial support both to the millers and farmers.

The Bill has gone through the second reading in Parliament and currently it is subjected to public participation.
