Kenya: House Leaders, IEBC Bi-Partisan Talks Team Co-Chairs to Meet Thursday

Nairobi — A team of legislators comprising of House leadership and representatives of members of bi-partisan team will tommorow have a meeting to reach a consensus before talks.

The participants of the meeting aimed at reaching a consensus on the talks include Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah (National Assembly),Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi (National Assembly).

Their counterparts in the Senate; Majority Leader Aaron Cheruyoit and Minority Leader Sterwart Madzayo will also being involved in the talks aimed at settling on a harmonised motion.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo who chairs the Azimio team on bi-partisan talks has also been invited for the talks alongside Tharaka Nithi MP George Murugara who is a member of the Kenya Kwanza team.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula directed that both coalition parties should have a sitting and ensure they reach a consensus on a harmonised motion on poll body reconstitution.

"As you may be well aware that parliamentary practice requires that a motion of this be presented to the House after a consensus of the majority and minority coalition. I direct the clerk of the National Assembly to represent the motion to the Minority coalition for consensus," said Wetangula.

This is following the move by the Majority Leader Ichung'wah to table a notice of motion listing Kenya Kwanza Alliance representatives on the talks with those from Azimio missing.

"We need a forum for us to have talks before the talks. And as you have directed such motions need to have consensus on terms of reference and the working framework,"said Ichung'wa.

Azimio has insisted that the bi-partisan talks should be based on four thematic areas including cost of living, forensic audit of IEBC servers, reconstitution of IEBC and reinstatement of Cherera Four.

The opposition coalition is also pushing for an extra-parliamentary process.

The President William Ruto led coalition has however maintained that the talks will be done in strict adherence to the parliamentary procedures and will only involve IEBC reconstitution.
