Kenya: Wa Iria Insists Azimio Town Hall Meeting to Continue Despite Ban By Police

Nairobi — Usawa Party Leader Mwangi wa Iria has maintained that a town hall meeting organized by Azimio Coalition will go on as planned despite police rejecting their request to hold the gathering.

His statement comes a few hours after police turned down Azimio's request to hold the meeting on the basis that the Raila Odinga-led coalition issued a late notification to them.

The former Murang'a governor faulted police over the move saying that peaceful assembly is provided for in the constitution.

"I want to tell police officers that we were not seeking for permission form police. However, for the sake of courtesy we informed them(police) and it is the courtesy that they have rejected," Wa Iria said.

He went on to say that the meeting is not meant for police but is targeting citizens calling on the police to allow them to exercise their constitutional right without any interference.

Wa iria rallied Murang'a residents to turn up in large numbers to attend the event and urged those planning to attend the meeting to be in Murang'a town by 10 a.m.

He added that all Azimio leaders including Opposition Chief Odinga, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa among others have confirmed that they will grace the event.

The meeting comes a week after Azimio held a similar meeting in Nairobi.
