Kenyans to Bear High Cost of Living for Next 2yrs As Govt Works to Stabilise Economy, Mudavadi Says

Nairobi — Kenyans will continue to bear the high cost of living for the next two years as the government puts in place measures to stabilize the high cost of living that has made life untenable among Kenyans.

While on the floor of the National Assembly to answer questions, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi dashed the hopes of Kenyans for the situation to change in the near future due to surrounding factors.

"We are going to have good focus on priorities and have them sustained consistently, religiously and from a personal perspective. We need to prepared to have around two years of challenges as Kenyans," he said.

Mudavadi emphasized that the measures taken by the government to stabilize the economy and address food insecurity are long-term sustainable approach which will not alleviate the harsh economic times Kenyans are grappling with.

"I want to be honest to this house and to the Kenyans people. I want to state to the Kenyan people that we are in this for a long haul. The hole and the circumstances that we are in cannot be wished away like instant coffee," Mudavadi noted.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary reiterated that the government will continue to subsidize production to subsidize the drivers of the escalation of commodity food prices.

"When there was a subsidy on fuel it was costing the government of Kenya 16 to 20 Billion per month that was impossible to sustain. So no matter who in the driving seat of government, its not practical," Mudavadi noted.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary was answering to questions raised by Kamkunji MP Yussuf Hassan on the efforts that the Government is instituting to cushion Kenyans from the unbearable cost of living as a result of rising prices of basic commodities and fuel.
