Africa: TotalEnergies U17 AFCON - Congo Hope to Start On Winning Note

Congo will be looking forward to start their TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Algeria 2023 campaign on a winning note, as they roll their sleeves for what promises to be a massive brawl against Senegal in Algiers on Sunday.

The tie will be the second in Group B, following on to Algeria's match against debutants Somalia, the official opening game of the 2023 showpiece.

Congo's head coach Fabrizio Cesana says his players know how important it would be to start off with victory, and they will give as much energy into the duel against Senegal.

"As in all competitions, the first match will be important. We know we face a difficult game, but we have to take the chances that come our way and ensure we get a positive result," the coach says.

He adds; "A team will be crowned winner at the end of the day and for us, we are not thinking about that now. Our strategy is to take a game at a time and the initial target is to move forward at the end of the group phase."

Congo are playing the tournament for the third time, and their best ever performance was in 2011 when they reached the semis, and finished third.

Cesana says the morale of his players is high not only to replicate the 2011 performance, but also go a step further and try battle for the crown.

Skipper Axel Lebo also echoed the coach's sentiments especially as far as winning the first game is concerned.

"This match is very important for us and we will try to win it. The goal is to try to qualify for the World Cup. It's not an easy thing. We have to do our best," he said.
