South Africa were able to book their spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup after the first one day international between Ireland and Bangladesh was washed out on Tuesday.
The Proteas are eighth in the World Cup Super League standings; and could only have been overtaken had Ireland sealed a 3-0 white wash over Bangladesh.
The Irish were unlucky to have missed out on a full game, having previously chosen to move the series to England in the hopes of having good weather.
Unfortunately for them and viewers hoping for a full game, the match was abandoned with Ireland 65/3 in the 17th over in pursuit of Bangladesh's 247 run target.
The two sides will now need to partake in the qualifying tournament between 18 June and 9 July alongside the likes of West Indies, Sri Lanka and qualifier hosts Zimbabwe for a place at the finals.
The rainy weather at Chelmsford could just be the change in fortune South Africa needed ahead of the tournament in India.
England, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India are the other sides confirmed to join the Proteas in the October/November showpiece event.
