press release

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, 22 May 2023 - The Africa Data Leadership Initiative (ADLI), a peer learning and exchange network founded by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Smart Africa, and the Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL), successfully organized a Peer Learning Workshop on April 25th, 2023, on the side-lines of the Transform Africa Summit in Victoria Falls.

With a primary focus on data protection policies and institutions, the ADLI workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss institutional frameworks pertaining to data protection policies and strategies, aiming to establish robust data protection authorities in African countries. A key takeaway from the discussions emphasized the urgent need for increased efforts at the continental level to harmonize data protection frameworks, while underscoring the significance of individuals as the sovereign owners of their own data.

ADLI, founded by the ECA in partnership with Smart Africa and the Digital Impact Alliance, is a dedicated network that focuses on data governance, digital platforms, and services. The initiative endeavours to address operational and policy challenges associated with aligning the data economy with African aspirations. By bringing together leaders in the field of data governance and digital transformation, the ADLI Network strives to catalyse positive change for people and communities across Africa.
