Kenya: Row Over Land Compensation Leads to Killing of Couple in Mandera

Nairobi — Row over land compensation for the Horn Rift Gateway Road that runs from Isiolo County to Mandera County has led to attacks that have resulted in the death of a couple in Kambi Samaki village.

Lagdera MP Abdi Kadir Hussein has claimed that the recent attacks by bandits are aimed to cause fear among his constituents by unknown bandits in the region.

"This is a border land and they want to remove my people from there so that they can get that land and get compensated by KENHA or the government," Hussein stated.

In 2021, the Kambi Samaki village which is along Garrissa-Isiolo border was attacked and five people lost their lives.

Hussein stated that police in the area have done little to arrest the situation alluding that it remains unclear why the government moved to remove the police camp in the area.

"Its not the first time even in 2021 it happended and the unfortunately there is no police camp there,it seems that the government has given in to the bandit. Why should they remove police officers when the place is insecure,"said Lagdera MP.

The Lagdera MP alleged that the bandits hailed from Isiolo County with aim of causing animosity along the border area.

"This is done by people who are interested in land and they are from Isiolo County. That land is in Garissa county and this people have settled there for the last 40 years, "Hussein stated.

The lawmaker have called the national government to arbitrate the boundary dispute with Isiolo to avert further bloody clashes.

History of bloody border clashes dating back to 2015 where hundreds have been killed and thousands of families displaced.

Leaders in the region have claimed that the protracted boundary clashes continued to claim lives and property even after efforts by local leaders to amicably resolve the standoff failed.

While politicians from both sides have been accused of fanning the conflicts, the government has come under scrutiny for taking too long to solve the boundary row.
