Nairobi — A total of 4.3 million farmers have been registered under a government initiative that seeks to collect their data.
Out of this, the Rift Valley leads with 1.2 million farmers, followed by Eastern Kenya with 888,675 and Nyanza, Western Kenya, and Central Kenya with 663,438, 614,146, and 591,776 farmers, respectively.
In January, the state launched a voluntary exercise program to establish a national database of all farmers, detailing their profiles, location, and crop acreage, among other identifiers.
The database would then help the government determine the level of support and extension services for each farmer, as well as fertilizers.
The Coast region compiled the least number of registrations, with 235,779 farmers, as well as North Eastern (44,679) and Nairobi (6,738).
In counties, Nakuru led with 230,787 farmers, followed by Bungoma (203,310), and Kakamega (203,173).
"Participation in the exercise is also high in Meru, where a total of 197,048 farmers have availed their personal information for registration. Notably, some counties have relatively low numbers of registered farmers, with Isiolo, Mombasa, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa recording well under ten thousand each," the statement further read.
