Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank, will lead a roundtable discussion about the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa with heads of state and representatives of development partners on 22 June 2023. The event, scheduled for 15:00-16:00 CEST, will take place on the sidelines of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris.
Adesina will be joined by seven heads of government. European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer and Muhammad Al Jasser, Chairman, Islamic Development Bank, will also attend.
Participants will make statements before President Adesina offers closing remarks.
The Alliance, an initiative of the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank, and Africa50 with other partners, is a platform for African countries and the private sector to raise $500 million in early-stage blended finance capital to catalyze up to $10 billion in green and climate-resilient projects and programs. Its ultimate goal is to accelerate a transition to net-zero emissions by Africa and for Africa.
The event will promote AGIA as a powerful platform to scale and accelerate the financing of transformational climate-resilient and greener infrastructure projects in Africa toward attracting new partners and financiers. It will also provide a progress update on the Alliance's activities since it was launched at COP27.
Convened by French President Emmanuel Macron, the June 22-23 Summit for a New Global Financing Pact seeks to rally political leaders, representatives of financial institutions, the private sector and civil society to lay the foundation for a new financial system that addresses inequality, debt overhangs, climate change and protecting biodiversity, and which is responsive, fairer and more inclusive. Chinese Premier Li Qiang and U.S Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen are expected to attend.
