Kenya: ODM Summons 28 MPs Who Voted for the Finance Bill

Nairobi — The Orange Democratic Movement has commenced disciplinary action against 28 legislators over their conduct during Wednesday's debate on The Finance Bill 2023.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the decision follows complaints from members of the public.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Wajir South MP Aden Mohamed, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi are accused of defying the party position and voting in favour of the Bill.

Also summoned are ODM Chairman and Nominated MP John Mbadi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Otiende Amollo (Rarieda), and George Aladwa (Madaraka) who are among 24 other legislators who were absent during the voting exercise on Wednesday evening.

MPs who stayed away during the voting exercise include Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino, Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o (Lang'ata), John Mbadi (Nominated MP), Said Buya Hiribae (Galole), Mohamed Abdikadir Hussein (Lagdera), Paul Ekwom Nabuin (Turkana North) and John Namoit Ariko (Turkana South).

Others on the list are Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o (Lang'ata), Said Buya Hiribae (Galole), Mohamed Abdikadir Hussein (Lagdera), Paul Ekwom Nabuin (Turkana North), John Namoit Ariko (Turkana South), Hamisi Kakuta Maimai (Kajiaodo East), Parashina Samuel Sakimba (Kajiado South), Titus Khamala Mukhawana (Lurambi), Johnson Naicca Manya (Mumias West), Peter Oscar Nabulindo (Matungu) and Nicholas Scott Tindi Mwale (Butere).

Christopher Aseka (Khwisero), Joseph Oyula (Butula), Wilberforce Oundo (Funyula), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Eve Akinyi Obara (Kasipul), Paul Abuor (Rongo), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Daniel Manduku (Nyaribari Masaba) and Irene Nyakerario Mayaka (Nominated MP).

Sifuna says that the 28 legislators have 48 hours to respond to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken.

The controversial Bill sailed through the second reading with 176 MPs supporting it against 81 who opposed it.
