Kenya: Give Us Information On Shakahola, Senate Committee Pleads

Kisumu — The Senate Adhoc committee investigating the proliferation of religious organizations is asking Kenyans with information on the Shakahola deaths to volunteer information to them.

The committee pitched tents in Kisumu on Friday meeting different groups as they gathered information on how best to deal with harmful religious practices in the country.

The chair of the committee Nominated Senator Shakila Mohammed said they need more information and appealed to Kenyans to step up and talk to them.

The team met with the county security committee, families of victims, religious leaders and human rights groups.

Shakila says they choose Kisumu and Vihiga counties since most of the Shakahola victims originated from Western Kenya region.

"We must bring to an end such happenings in this country and we appeal to Kenyans to walk with us as we pursue possible solutions," she said.

The Senator noted that there are many families who were affected by the Shakahola massacre but have failed to come out and share their stories with the committee.

The committee's main objective is to probe controversial Pastor Paul Mackenzie and his team's role in the deaths of the faithful.

Shakila says such information will be useful to the committee and help them to stop any other Shakahola related incidents happening in the country.

A member of the committee Senator Veronica Maina echoed the same sentiments noting that the stories from the victims in the area are moreless the same.

"The stories we have received from the victims here are very similar to stories in Kilifi," she said.

Maina says the committee is ready to listen to any person in regard to the incidents that happened in the Coastal region.

She noted that after gathering enough information, the committee will retreat to come up with a report, which, she said will help the country to deal with such cases in future.

The committee will be in Vihiga county on Saturday.
