Kenya: Technical University of Mombasa Students Riot Over Alleged Fee Increment

Mombasa — Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students on Monday rioted against an alleged fee increment.

During the chaos, the student centre and several businesses including a fast-food restaurant were set ablaze.

Property of unknown value was was also burnt down.

According to several students, they were demonstrating against fee increment of up to Sh6,5000 in the department of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"We were demonstrating against the extra fees being charged. We found that some of us had been charged Sh6,000 extra, others Sh3,000 and other Sh6,5000," said one of the students.

They denied any involvement in the burning down of the Student Centre.

"We were very peaceful until the police were called in to disperse the students. The fire that broke out had to be investigated, I do now believe that comraded can burn down an institution," said another student.

TUM Vice Chancellor Professor Laila Abubakar and the students' leadership were said to be held up in a meeting to discuss the situation.
