Kenya: Judiciary Launches Performance Evaluation Report

Nairobi — Chief Justice Martha Koome says the Judiciary has resolved a total of 381,713 cases overall in the 2021/2022 year compared to 294,837 in the previous period.

The Chief Justice, who launched the Performance Management and Measurement Evaluation Report 2021/2022 this afternoon indicated that most courts and administrative units showed improvement, with significant achievements noted in the Environment and Land Court.

"During the review period, the overall performance of the Judiciary was 93.71 per cent, which marked a significant improvement over the previous year when it was at 89.03 per cent, which was largely attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that slowed down court operations at the time," she said.

She added that notable improvements recorded in various indicators, such as the case clearance rate has improved from 83 per cent in 2020/2021 to 95 per cent in 2021/2022.

Koome also noted that in the stated period the year 2021/2022, cases older than 3 years were reduced by 11% marking a reduction of these cases from 150,897 to 133,775.

Similarly cases older than 1 year were reduced by 7% from 375,671 to 336,426 cases.

"These results are quite encouraging and are a good indication that the different interventions being implemented are leading to improvements in service delivery," she said.

"The efforts and commitments of the judges, judicial officers and staff is quite commendable as the Judiciary focuses on dealing with perennial of challenge of case backlog which has persisted over the years as well as keeping pace with disposing off new cases filed which are every year."

Koome urged the institution to continue to have regular dialogues regarding successful performance and service delivery improvement initiatives which will help maintain a high-performance culture.

"It is my expectation that we shall continue to embrace the culture of accountability through the sustained institutionalization of performance management in the Judiciary," she added.
