Kenya: Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdulahi Says SRC Doesn't Need President Ruto's Concurrence, Refusal on Pay Hike Recommendations

Nairobi — Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdulahi has backed the move by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), to press on with the planned review of salaries for all public sector workers, despite public remarks by President William Ruto advising against any pay increments for the highly paid senior officials.

In a statement shared via his official Twitter account, the senior counsel who is an ally of Ruto noted the commission, is independent and does not require the concurrence of any state officer, when it adds or reduces their salaries.

He further advised the President and his deputy that if they are philanthropic enough, they can give the increment to charity.

On Friday, William Ruto directed the SRC to freeze wage increases for State officers arguing this could widen the pay disparity.

The SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich on Saturday stated that its review of the gross monthly remuneration for State officers, adheres to international standards where the average monthly pay sits below the median income for comparable roles in the civil service.
