Kenya: I Have Always Carpooled With Azimio Leaders, Karua Says

Nairobi — Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua has said that she practices carpooling with other Azimio leaders to cut on the fuel costs.

In an interview with Spice FM on Monday, Karua said that it is nothing new as the coalition has been practising it.

"Long before the taxation issue came, I always carpooled, there are meetings we have appeared in one car with Eugene (former Defence CS Eugine Wamalwa) at times with other people," she said.

"Carpooling is not a new thing to us, even to do things we do, we need to cut on costs of how we operate, we not telling people things we have not done."

Karua further explained that such actions result in the government collecting less money through taxes.

"Making them get less money because they have refused to listen to Kenyans, they are making life more difficult, they ought to be denied what they are seeking."

On June 27, Azimio asked its supporters to carpool following the increase of VAT on petroleum products from 8 percent to 16 percent which will result to a spike in petroleum prices.

Speaking at the Kamukunji grounds during a rally, the coalition's leader Raila Odinga urged all Kenyans to boycott the payment of tax in protest of the law.

"A regime that has betrayed us does not deserve our delegated power, we shall fight for our rights as the people of Kenya," Odinga stated. "Ruto and his people have betrayed Kenyan."

The coalition at the same time declared an end to the bi-partisan talks even after a fresh invite for negotiations by their Kenya Kwanza counterpart.

According to Eugene Wamalwa, the decision to call off the talks was part of declarations the party has made as it plans to embark on a campaign of civil disobedience including refusal to pay taxes.
