Kenya: Jubilee Party's Kega Faction to Hold NDC in August

Nairobi — Jubilee Party's faction affiliated with President William Ruto Kenya Kwanza alliance has set August 7, 2023, as the date for its National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Bomas of Kenya.

In a notice to party members, Kanini Kega, the Acting Secretary General, revealed that the convention's primary focus would be the election of new national officials.

The other agenda for the NDC encompasses various matters, including the examination of audited statements of accounts for the year, the review, formulation, and approval of party policies and regulations, and the consideration of proposed changes to the party, which will be amended, reviewed, or ratified as necessary.

Kega's announcement of the NDC comes barely a day after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) affirmed his appointment as the party's official Acting Secretary General, solidifying his position within the party hierarchy.

"Following a review of the submitted documents in line with the Political Parties Act

and the party constitution, this Office is satisfied that the party adhered

to the due process. Accordingly, pursuant to section 34(da) of the act,

this office has updated its records and the register of party members," the ruling read in part.

Kega who leads the Jubilee faction that parted ways with Azimio and joined forces with President Ruto, has been entangled in a fierce battle for control against the former Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni.

On the opposing side, Kioni leads a group supported by former party leader and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, who remains aligned with Azimio.

The Kioni faction led by former President Kenyatta had in May held their own NDC and resolved to expel the rebel lawmakers and remain in the Azimio coalition.

In a recent move, the Kega faction took decisive action by removing retired President Kenyatta from his position as party leader and appointed nominated MP Sabina Chege as the interim replacement.
