Kenya: Political Parties' Body Roots for Dialogue Ahead of Protests

Nairobi — The Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPL) Monday issued a call for national dialogue amidst the ongoing posturing and confrontational stance between the government and the opposition regarding the nationwide protests.

The parties' body emphasized the importance of engaging in constructive and inclusive discussions to address the current situation and find a way forward for the country.

"The solution to this lies not in militant or grandiose grandstanding but in dialogue. We must climb down from our high places and approach the dialogue table," the Chairman of the Committee Evans Misati said.

The opposition leader, Raila Odinga, is spearheading a series of anti-government protests and is preparing for a three-day demonstration starting on Wednesday and concluding on Friday.

Raila, as the leader of the Azimio movement, is exerting pressure on the government to tackle the escalating cost of living.

However, President William Ruto remains dismissive of Raila's efforts and has firmly stated that he will not allow another round of protests to occur during his tenure.

To prevent a potential crisis in the country, Misati subsequently put forth a recommendation for the initiation of an all-inclusive national dialogue and healing conference.

"We cannot fight and maim each other out of the current crisis," he said.

The conference he said should comprise fully registered political parties, religious leaders, civil societies, and professional bodies," he said.

Kenya Kwanza leaders are in the meantime pushing the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and Director of Criminal Investigations Boss Mohammed Amin to initiate an investigation, apprehend, and prosecute individuals responsible for organizing and funding the recent wave of violent protests in the nation.
