Kenya: Fate of 8 ODM Rebel MPs With NEC After Disciplinary Committee Concludes Hearings

Nairobi — The fate of the eight rebel MPs from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) now resides with the National Executive Council (NEC) after the party's disciplinary committee concluded the hearing and report writing.

The five member ODM disciplinary committee chaired by Professor Ben Sihanya is expected to forward their recommendations on the eight lawmakers to the NEC chaired by the party chairman John Mbadi.

Last week, the disciplinary committee questioned Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Shakeel Shabir (Kisumu East, Independent) Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o (Lang'ata), Paul Abuor (Rongo), John Owino (Awendo) and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda.

The embattled MPs are accused of contravening the Political Parties Act having shown dalliance to the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

As per the party constitution, a member may be deemed to have resigned from a political party if that person promotes the ideology, interests or policies of another political party.

The members have been faulted for associating themselves with President William Ruto and therefore they are deemed to have resigned from ODM.

The renegade MPs defended themselves when they faced the disciplinary committee explaining that their meeting with President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua was in search of development for their constituents.

The 42 member NEC team is expected to choose to either uphold the disciplinary committee recommendation or turn it down.

If the NEC upholds their expulsion it will recommend to the National Governing Council the sanction of the same.

The National Delegates Convention as the topmost organ will then ratify the decision and pave the way for the decision to be forwarded to the Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu for the seeking the removal of the renegade MPs.
