Mombasa — The Office of the Data Commissioner (ODPC) has opened a new office in Mombasa to provide data protection services in the coastal areas.
The first regional office was opened today by Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo.
He was accompanied by ICT and the Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui, ODPC Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassit, and other officials.
CS Owalo said that the government is committed to protecting Kenyans data.
"We want to ensure that any data that comes into the hands of the government, public data that the government holds in trust is both private and secure in conformity to the law," he said.
"As a government we welcome technology and indeed we have the cutting edge of driving the digital evolution in Kenya, in East Africa and Africa in general."
The new office now pushes ODPC's countrywide locations to four in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
Kassit ensured that the team will conduct workshops, training programs, and awareness programs to empower citizens with knowledge about their privacy rights and responsible data handling.
"The presence of ODCP in the Coastal region will play a key role in enabling local businesses to comply with data communication laws and will subsequently enable them access global opportunities," State Department for ICT and Digital Economy PS Tanui said.
