Uganda: Former Rebel Hands Over Rifle to Police

10 August 2023

A former rebel has handed over his AK 47 rifle and 5 rounds of ammunition to police in Koboko District.

The rebel who belonged to the National Army for Salvation (NAS) that was based in South Sudan, handed over his weapon on Wednesday, August 9 in Oraba town council.

He handed over his weapon in the presence of police, ISO and UPDF operatives. The successful handover followed an operation of voluntary disarmament through the DISO's office, according to police spokesperson Josephine Angucia.

Security operatives had long been trying to convince the former rebel to abandon NAS, return home and resettle with his family. They finally succeeded and the handover was the culmination of these efforts.

The serial number of the rifle could not be read because of the effect of rust on the weapon.

Angucia said that the rebel may not be prosecuted as he had voluntarily handed over his weapon. The recovery is being handled vide Koboko CPS SD ref 66/09/08/2023.
