Kenya: Odinga Says 10 Million Signatures Collected to Oust President Ruto

16 September 2023

Nairobi — Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition says the opposition has collected more than ten million signatures so far in a campaign they say is aimed at removing President William Ruto from office.

During the assessment of the first-year performance of the Kenya Kwanza Regime by the Azimio Economic Council, leader Raila Odinga promised to announce the next cause of action to remove President Ruto from power saying it would not involve anti-government protests.

With the ongoing bi-partisan talks between the Azimio La Umoja Coalition and Kenya Kwanza Alliance, Odinga pointed out that the next cause of action is a secret card that will be unleashed depending on the outcome of the talks.

"As you know we have been collecting signatures from Kenyans which are more than ten million signatures which are enough for the next step. This time we will not tell the electorate to go to the streets," he stated.

"I won't reveal the next action right now because our people are having dialogue with those on the other side but watch this space," he said.

Impeachment Grounds

On July 7, the Former Prime Minister launched an aggressive campaign to remove President Ruto from power quoting Article 1, clauses One and Two of the Constitution where he seeks to 'withdraw sovereignty from his grip.

However, the Constitution says a president can only be ousted by way of the Parliament and only two grounds; impeachment and incapacity.

In the case of impeachment, a legislator, supported by at least a third of all MPs, moves a motion for impeachment on three grounds.

They include a gross violation of a provision of the Constitution or of any other law, serious reasons for believing that the President has committed a crime under national or international law or for gross misconduct.

According to Article 144 of the Constitution, this will be on grounds of either mental or physical incapacity hindering him from performing his duties.

An MP, supported by at least a quarter of all members of the National Assembly can file a motion to have the President investigated on the aforementioned.

If the motion amasses majority support, the Speaker of the House informs the Chief Justice within two days.

Within seven days after reception of the notice, the CJ or the deputy CJ is required to appoint a tribunal of three qualified medical personnel, an advocate of the High Court and one person nominated by the President.

Odinga on Ruto after 1 year

The Azimio La Umoja Principal said the assessment done on the mark of one year of leadership by the Kenya Kwanza Regime was a dismal performance marred by high cost of living, wanton corruption and State Capture.

One year into his presidency, President Ruto has scored a D minus according to the Opposition Coalition scorecard rating that was released today.

"The rating on the basis of the information we have received here. Our score card for these regime is 30 percent that is D-,"Odinga said.

Yesterday, Odinga tore into President William Ruto's administration one year in governance terming it disastrous.

On Friday, Odinga addressed the media at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka command center said the government's efforts to reduce the cost of living through rhetoric has failed terribly with the increase of key commodities prices.

"As the sun set on the first year of Kenya Kwanza, it is clear that no amount of oratory or extravagant claims can hide the harsh fact that we have had an extremely disastrous and difficult one year," he said.

The Azimio La Umoja Leader warned that the second year of Kenya Kwanza would be much distratrous saying positive economic trajectory cannot be maintained through propaganda.

He outlined that the increase of fuel and electricity prices will increase inflation in the country arguing that the Feterlizer subsidy program will not solve the high cost of living issue.

"No amount of fertilizer will lower the cost of food as long as the cost of fuel is unchecked. Diesel is one of the highest costs in farming. Even if you give the citizen a bag of fertilizer but make it impossible for her to plough an acre of land you have not solved the problem," Odinga said.

Odinga pointed out that the country's currency losing a quarter of its value to the US dollar during Ruto's administration is a betrayal to the electorate.

He noted that the Kenyan currency which is regarded as mighty in the East African region is on a downward trajectory having lost 20 percent of its value against the Tanzania and Uganda shilling.

"The fall of the shilling comes with a great price that includes escalated cost of imports including food. The free fall of the shilling is therefore a grand betrayal of the people of Kenya by the Kenya Kwanza regime," said the ODM leader.
